Best Hot Springs in Tokyo: Luxury Spa and Wellness Experience at Hotel Chinzanso Tokyo

A country with numerous active volcanoes, Japan boasts several regions with excellent hot springs, known as “onsen” in Japanese.

Since bathing in the mineral-rich hot spring water is believed to have therapeutic and skin-enhancing effects, hot springs are highly sought after by international visitors.  Beautiful nature scenery, long walks around town, and delicious kaiseki cuisine offered at ryokans (Japanese inns) are also part of the Japanese hot spring experience.

Onsen resorts are typically in the mountains. But what if you could immerse yourself in these same luxuries without leaving Tokyo? At YU, THE SPA, the luxury spa at Hotel Chinzanso Tokyo, our guests can enjoy natural hot springs sourced from Izu Peninsula. Our expansive garden offers the perfect backdrop for a relaxing stay. Read on to learn more about the hot springs and luxury spa services available at Hotel Chinzanso Tokyo.

One of Tokyo’s Only Luxury Hotels with Hot Springs

YU, THE SPA, our hotel’s award-winning spa, comprises a hot spring bathing area, a spa treatment facility, an indoor pool, a sauna, and a fitness gym. The spa is reserved for hotel guests, spa club members, and visitors who book spa treatments.

The hot spring water is sourced from Ito, a city on the Izu Peninsula, renowned for its exceptional onsen resorts. Originating from a hot spring with a hypotonic alkaline level, the water is gentle on the skin and its mineral content is well-balanced. It contains small quantities of sodium (164 mg/kg), hydrogen carbonate ion (22 mg/kg), and sulfuric acid (392.6 mg/kg).. This type of water is believed to alleviate muscle pain and chronic joint pain, including conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, neuralgia, and lower back pain. It is also thought to relieve symptoms of fatigue, insomnia, and stress and improve gastrointestinal function.

After enjoying the hot spring bath, take the time to relax in the spa lounge with a complimentary drink. The warm, cozy atmosphere of this space will help you unwind.

In order to fully benefit from the effects of bathing in hot spring water, why not combine it with a spa treatment? There is a wide range of facial and full-body spa treatments available at YU, THE SPA that will leave you feeling deeply relaxed and rejuvenated. Please refer to this page for a detailed description of our spa facility.

YU, THE SPA is one of the very few luxury spa facilities in Tokyo equipped with an indoor pool and hot springs. While it is possible to visit during the day to enjoy the hot springs and treatments, we warmly recommend booking an overnight stay that includes access to the spa. A leisurely stay at the hotel while enjoying the garden, the Tokyo Sea of Clouds, as well as the refined cuisine at our restaurants, will make you feel as refreshed as a trip to a resort in the mountains.

Features of YU, THE SPA

YU, THE SPA is a wellness sanctuary nestled within the hotel. This serene facility seamlessly blends traditional Japanese healing practices with modern spa treatments, providing an ideal space for relaxation. It is available exclusively to hotel guests, spa members, and those who book treatments.

Indoor Pool

One of the spa’s standout features is its all-weather, heated indoor pool. Designed to harmonize with the surrounding natural environment, the pool is bright and inviting, with a retractable roof that allows natural light and fresh air to filter in.

Whether swimming leisurely or simply unwinding in the water, guests can enjoy the calming ambiance even in the heart of the city.

24-Hour Fitness Gym

For those who want to exercise during their stay, the spa includes a fully equipped gym that is open 24 hours a day. Guests can enjoy a range of machines and free weights, and sportswear and shoes are available for rent, making it easy to work out without packing extra gear. Personal training is also available upon request.

Spa Treatments

YU, THE SPA offers a wide range of treatment options that fuse Eastern and Western techniques. These include full-body massages, facials, and aromatherapy, each tailored to promote deep relaxation and healing. Treatments use products from high-quality international brands and are performed by experienced therapists in private, tranquil rooms that overlook the hotel’s expansive Japanese garden.

Among the spa’s signature treatments is the Japoneira Body Treatment, a full-body therapy created to mark the hotel’s 70th anniversary. This deeply hydrating treatment uses a special camellia oil extracted from unheated Japanese camellia flowers, a symbol of Hotel Chinzanso Tokyo. The oil is prized for its ability to soften and nourish the skin, leaving it radiant and smooth.

Tip: Guests staying in suite rooms enjoy complimentary spa access as part of the Executive Lounge privileges. Learn more about the Executive Lounge benefits here.

Japanese Hot Spring Etiquette: What to Know Before You Soak

Japan boasts a rich hot spring culture with roots that go back to ancient times. This comes along with a particular bathing etiquette. If you’re using the hot springs in Japan for the first time, please check the following guidelines:

    • No swimwear is allowed; enter the bath without clothing.
      • Do not dip towels into the hot spring water. Please leave your clothes and belongings in the lockers or baskets available in the dressing room.
    • Wash thoroughly at the showers before soaking.
      • Before entering the baths, please shower first.
    • Limit your first soak to around 3 minutes; gradually extend over time.
      • If you’d like to soak a little longer, we suggest getting out, taking a quick shower, and then taking a slightly longer dip. Staying in hot water for too long can cause nausea and fatigue; persons with anemia should be cautious not to stay in for too long.
  • Rinse off after you bathe
    • Take another quick shower to refresh, then head to the dressing room.
  • Avoid soaking after alcohol or with a full stomach. Bathe before dinner for best comfort and safety.
  • Hydrate well after your bath; complimentary drinks are available in the spa lounge.

YU, THE SPA provides premium soaps, shampoos, conditioners, skin lotions, hair dryers and towels – no need to bring anything from your room.

Beyond the Spa: Dining, Nature, and Garden Bliss

Extend your wellness retreat with a multi-sensory experience:

  • Dine in elegance: Enjoy seasonal kaiseki cuisine at Ryotei Kinsui, or explore Japanese specialties at Miyuki and Mokushundo, the latter featuring lava stone-grilled dishes from Mt. Fuji.
  • Stroll the gardens: The hotel’s historic Japanese garden transforms from a tranquil oasis by day to a mystical landscape at night. It becomes illuminated by soft lights and enveloped by the Tokyo Sea of Clouds, a display that adds a dreamlike atmosphere several times daily.

Even for non-staying guests, spa treatments offer a taste of this tranquility. Visitors can arrive up to 60 minutes before their appointment to enjoy the hot springs and sauna. Pool access is also available for an additional fee with early arrival.
