[Activity for staying guests] Make your own hand-baked rice crackers, with kelp tea

20170829184031402

Experience for yourself the refined taste of this delicacy, served at a famous old shop in Edogawabashi.

Edogawabashi’s nostalgic Jizo Dori is a small shopping street that still retains the charm and ambience of an old-fashioned side street. It comprises a row of 60 or so shops including a butcher, fish shop, green grocer and Japanese confectionery shop.  Among these, the long-standing Japanese confectionery store Teyaki Sembei Kisaku, or “Kisaku Hand-baked Rice Crackers”, has been in business for nearly 70 years. Here you can enjoy the rare experience of true hand-baked rice crackers, made through a careful process that shuns the modern emphasis on efficiency and automation.

You will also get to try kelp tea made by the century-old Gyokuroen, the largest domestic producer of this unique and delicious drink that was born of a passion to create “a new taste that cannot be experienced anywhere else.”

We invite you to come and enjoy the unique surroundings and flavors on offer at this establishment steeped in tradition.

For baking the rice crackers, traditional high-grade ubame oak charcoal is used, and the baking itself involves working with your hands over the grill. For safety reasons only one guest at a time will be allowed into the grilling area together with a professional artisan. This means guests will take it in turns to experience the baking process.

*For safety we will provide you with work gloves and an apron. However, please avoid clothing that exposes a lot of skin such as short-sleeved tops or shorts. Please be advised that the work area is usually very hot.

*We can offer this activity for children of 10 years or over. However, as long as they are accompanied by a guardian, elementary school age children (from 6 years of age) may also take part. (In this case parent and child will enter the grilling area together).

List of potential allergens: The ingredients include wheat and soy.

*Please feel free to buy any additional souvenirs or order whatever you wish. Additional orders/shopping will have to be paid for directly in the respective stores, however.

“Kisaku” Authentic Hand-baked Rice Crackers

Founded in 1948, Kisaku is a small shopping street store making and selling rice crackers the old-fashioned way. Since its founding, the shop has been producing its distinctive and much-loved flavor of rice crackers, rich in the fragrance of rice and soy sauce, and grilled by true craftsmen on high-grade oak charcoal. Their famous “deliberately broken rice-crackers” are made using a special patented production process and have been featured on TV and in magazines.

Gyokuroen

Founded in 1918, Gyokuroen has been making kelp tea for almost 100 years.

Solely devoted to kelp tea, the quality of their tea has earned it great acclaim over the years.  They make their brew from a special variety of kelp only grown in Hokkaido’s Rausu town. It is also use as a subtle accent in Japanese cuisine.
